Tips For Appearing On Television

What to Wear

Avoid wearing:
- Clothes with excessive patterns, they tend to be distracting.
- Thin stripes and herringbone are not great either, they cause an optical effect called moire’ which is a visual ringing.
Choose solids or bold shapes and patterns…most of all be comfortable. Remember-to look good you must feel good! If you are going to be seated, be aware of any clothing that may bunch up. Pants, or dresses, that ride up too far while seated will probably be picked up on camera.

Colors: very important in the clothes you wear on TV. Since it is a visual medium, what you wear can distract from and even dilute your message. The camera works well with deep, solid colors, often better than gray or black. You know what colors work for you the best, if you always wear black, then black it is! Please avoid totally WHITE.

We usually need to attach a clip on microphone (lavalier) to the top half of your clothes, about chest high. The clip is similar to a tie clip and can be altered to fit any situation. Try to wear clothing with this in mind, but again stay within your comfort zone.

Makeup
Most production facilities will be able to provide you with makeup services.
If you are on your own, you try to apply a very simple makeup (base and powder) when appearing on television or videotape. This helps to reduce shine and perspiration created by the lights and camera. Try using hypoallergenic makeup , which can easily be washed off after the show.
